Mrs. Valerie Lee "VAL" Johnston, 70, of Grayling passed away onTuesday, April 17th, 2007. Val was born in Flint, Michigan on March 31, 1937, the daughter of the late Donald Earl and Calla Myrtle (Richards) McLaren. She married Elwood A. "AL" Johnston. on November 4, 1961 in Davison Michigan. She moved to Grayling in 1995, coming from Davison. Val was very active in the Davison United Methodist Church prior to moving to Grayling,. She served on the Davison School Board for 8 years and also was a board member of the Davison Senior Center. She was the first female president of Kiwanis Clubs in Davison and Grayling. Upon moving to Graying, Val became involved in many community activities. At Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church, she served as chairperson of the kitchen, co-chair of the worship committee and choir. She volunteered at the Crawford County Historical Society and Wellington Farm Park, and served on the board of Habitat for Humanity. Enjoyed the activities of the Red Hat Society and served as secretary/treasurer for Warbler's Hideaway Homeowner Association. Survived by her husband Al of 45 years; Daughter(s): Jill Bethany (George) Claxton of Ypsilanti, MI. Jayne Patrice (Fiance`Robert Carey) Anderson of Grand Blanc, MI Grandchildren: Joshua Everett & Kayla Bethany Claxton, Emilee Paige & Evan Boyd Anderson. Sister: Avis (Larry) Hensley of Flint, MI. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special close friends. Memorial Service will be held at Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayling, MI. at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 20th, 2007 with Dr. William Cargo officiating. Memorial service will be held at Davison United Methodist Church in Davison at 10:00 am on Saturday April 21, 2007 with Rev. Thomas Wachterhauser & Dr. William Cargo officiating.. Family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Kiwanis Club of Grayling or Davison, American Heart Association, or Leukemia Society. Family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Grayling Mercy Hospital, CCU Staff, Bobbi & Bob.
