Roy ""Gunny"" Knight

Roy "Gunny" Knight, Jr. of Grayling passed away January 14, 2011, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 74. Roy was born August 11, 1936 in Honea Path, SC. He married Bonnie Lee Ward of Grayling December 31, 1963 in Beaufort, SC. He proudly served 20 years in the Marine Corps and served two tours in Vietnam, including one with The Flaming I, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines. He retired in 1975 as a decorated Marine with several honors including the Purple Heart. Roy was also retired from the City of Grayling where he was a custodian for the City Hall and Michigan State Police Crime Lab. He is preceded in death by his parents Texianna and James Roy Knight and brothers Walter and Troy Knight. Roy was a beloved husband, proud father and loving grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie Lee (Ward) Knight; his four children James (Kellie) Knight of Grayling, Kristina (Scott) Arbelius of Negaunee, MI, Charlotte (Aaron) Chamberlain of Pickerington, Ohio, and CPT Michael (Karie) Knight of Ft. Leonard Wood, MO; grandchildren Daniel, Joshua, Jonnie, Georgie, Megan, Abby, Lauren, Shelby, Andrew, Emily, Ryan, and Caleb and great-grandchildren Karter and Hayden. Roy also leaves behind one sister, Ann Foster, of Honea Path, SC and numerous other family members and friends. Roy was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to VFW Post 3736. Respecting Roy's wishes, no services will be held. Arrangements entrusted to Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home.
