Merna Kathryne Newberry, 83, of Frederic, passed away on peacefully in Traverse City on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. Born in Highland Park on October 4, 1931 to the late John and Kathryn (Watson) Glen. She met Kenneth Newberry while spending her summers in Maple Forest, the couple married on August 13, 1950. Together they owned and operated Newberry's General Store (Mobil Station). She was employed by Crawford AuSable Schools as the librarian at the Frederic Elementary from which she retired. Merna enjoyed being involved in her community. She was the founder of the Frederic Library and was the librarian for 6 years and served as president for 6 years. She along with friends started the Frederic Hobby Club which existed for over 45 years. Merna was also a member of the Frederic Business Association. Merna loved music and books, some of her other hobbies were basket making, crocheting, and crafts. She also enjoyed traveling to Canada to spend time with family. Merna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, sister Marilyn Post, and son Forrest. Merna is survived by her sister Pricilla Freeman of Oregon, daughters: Janet and Kathy Newberry of Traverse City, Marnie Wiggins of Traverse City, and son Kenneth of Frederic, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grand children. Service will be held at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home at 1:00 P. M. on Saturday, September 26, 2015. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the local library.
