Marilyn Stancil, 68, passed away at home on January 5, 2018. She was born in Grayling May 31, 1949, the daughter of William and Marian Joseph, and was proud to be a member of one of Grayling's oldest families. Marilyn graduated from Grayling High School in 1967 and from Michigan State in 1971. During her school and college years, she loved working in her family's business, the Grayling Mercantile Company (or "The Merc" as it was always called). She married George L. Stancil on May 29, 1971, beginning nearly 47 years of marriage. The couple was blessed by three sons: Jordan, Nicholas, and Alexander. She was also the proud grandmother to two grandchildren, George and Eve Marie, born to Nicholas and his wife, Julia. With the exception of college and one year teaching in Florida, Marilyn spent her entire life in Grayling. For many years, she was a teacher in Crawford-AuSable Schools. She was personally and emotionally committed to her students and their well-being, both in and out of the classroom. Her approach to education was not only unique but grounded in genuine caring for her students. She considered each of them her own. Marilyn was an active member of the community, always willing to help make Grayling a better place. She was a member of Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church, where in younger years she helped with the Sunday School and nursery. She is survived by her children and grandchildren and was preceded in death by her parents. Services will be held at Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayling on Friday, January 12, with visitation at 11 a.m. and service at noon.
