George Henley Morse

George Henley Morse, 87, of Grayling, passed away on February 2, 2018. He was born on April 13, 1930 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late Margaret (Bellamy) and George Morse. George attended high school in Jackson, Michigan. In the last semester of high school, he joined the US Army and served 5 years in both Korea and Japan with seven months in combat. While yet in the Army, he passed his GED and first year of college. George was honorably discharged and received a purple heart. George graduated from Michigan State University in 1967, with a BA in Social Sciences, by taking advantage of the GI Bill. He married the former Lorna Kitch in 1964 in Lansing, Michigan. Together they raised 6 children. In 1983, George retired from the State of Michigan as a Youth Counselor at Boys Training School in Lansing, Camp LaVictor and Camp Shawono in Grayling. He was a Licensed Local Pastor affiliated with the United Methodist Churches. He served 10 years in Glennie and Curran, and also as interim pastor in Hillman and Spratt. George attended Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church. George worked as a substitute teacher at Grayling High School. George shared his caring spirit by serving in many humanitarian and community activities including Crawford County Arts Council, Crawford County Peace Seekers, Drum Circle at Mercy Manor, local theater productions, Red Cross Blood Bank Volunteer, and many other worthy causes. Survived by his wife Lorna of 53 years. Children: Becky Morse-Buckwheat of Oregon, George J. (Summer) Morse, Dan (Doreen) Kitch, Ellen ( Doug) Kitch-Nelson of Williamston, Sue (Curt) Kitch Jansen of Grayling,and Jim (Rhonda) Kitch of Grayling. George was also blessed with 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his mother, Margaret (Bellamy) Morse and grandson, Steven Roy McEvers. A Memorial Service will be held on February 17, 2018 at Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church.
