George Francis Matyn, 105, of Grayling, left his earthly home on February 28, 2017. He was born on November 5, 1911 in Detroit, Michigan, to the late George Sebastian and Margaret (Anstette) Matyn. George served our country in the US Navy and was a Seabee. during World War II. George met Rosalia through his cousins and dear friends, Ed and Eva Matyn. Eva knew Rosalia through the Daughters of Isabella. Eva invited them both to dinner and told Dad, "Now George, it's up to you." They were happily married for 53 years. George married Rosalia at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Detroit on May 18, 1963. George loved to fish and they honeymooned in Grayling at the Brady cabin on Lake Margrethe. George and Rosalia had two daughters together, Marian and Alice, and with George's daughter Rose completed their family. After several years of weekend fishing in Grayling, they officially relocated there in 1969. George was a self-employed plumber who worked up until the last few years taking care of the plumbing and heating needs of many in Grayling and surrounding area. He enjoyed fishing, Detroit Tiger Baseball, friendships at Goodales,pie, and Detroit Boat Races. George was almost a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, and for the last 53 years, Council #1982. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church since 1969. Survived by Daughters: Rosemary Matyn of Roseville and Marian Matyn (Rod Leslie) of Clare. Grandchildren: Shawn (Matthew) Vilk, Patrick (Lauren) Spears, and Zachary Leslie. Great grandchildren: Olivia, Ava, Savannah, and Vanessa Vilk. Sisters: Gertrude Matyn and Grace Beyer. Brother: Vernon Matyn. Also survived by three generations of nieces and nephews, many cousins, and friends. Especially dear friends: Greg and Carolyn Waller of Roscommon Preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and their spouses; first wife, Genevieve (Carr)-Matyn in 1962; wife Rosalia in 2016; baby girl Patricia in 1942; daughter, Alice Matyn in 1994; Visitation will be held at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home on Friday, March 10, 2017 between 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery in the spring.
