George Edward Hammond

George Edward Hammond, 86, of Grayling (Bear Lake Township) passed away on Thursday December 9, 2010. George was born in Stubenville, Ohio on June 5, 1924, the son of the late John E. and Ruth Adelia (Welsher) Hammond. He served in the US Army as a Staff Sgt. in WW II. George received the Purple Heart Medal. George did a lot of volunteer VA work and was at one time the State Commander of the Purple Heart organization in Lansing. He married Marie Threasa (Riopelle) Hammond on February 13, 1943 in Oberlin, Louisiana. George retired from the City of Ecorse where he worked as a foreman in the water department. Survived by his wife Marie of 67 years. Daughters: Sandra Kay (Gary) Hasson of Frederic, MI. Patty (Earl) Knight of Riverton, Wyoming. Dawn (William) Burrick of Grayling, MI. Son: Geroge Edward Hammond II of Southgate, MI. 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren Sister, Joann (Sonny) Pemberton of California. Preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob, and sister Margie. A Memorial Service will be held in Summer 2011. Memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice.
