Duane Dennis Brooks, 87, of Grayling passed away peacefully at home Saturday, February 19, 2022.
Duane was born November 21, 1934 to Frederic and Mildred (Denning) Brooks in Lansing. He attended Barnes Air grade school (start of his career) where in the 6th grade, he was Fire Chief. He helped with air raid drills. He graduated from J W Sexton High School in June of 1952 and attended Michigan State University for 2 years.
Duane joined the Army in September 1954 and was stationed in Munich, Germany for 18 months and upon returning home went into the active reserve for 4 years.
In April of 1960 he took a summer job with the Conservation Department. A full-time position opened and he was stationed at Hunt Creek Research Station in Lewiston, MI through which he worked on the Ausable River system. In 1968 he transferred to the fire officer in the Grayling field office.
Duane volunteered for the Grayling Fire Department after retirement from the DNR in 1997 and still volunteered at the Grayling and was made Chief. He served there a total of 35 years. He was also a member of the Grayling Charter Township for 12 years, a member of Masonic Lodge 356, Grayling Eagles and American Legion. He was also a member of Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayling.
Duane is remembered by his many friends as a kind-warm hearted person, always willing to help anyone.
Fireman's Last Call Service, Masonic Service and Military Honors will all take place Friday, February 25, 2022, 12:00 pm at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home with visitation starting before at 10:00 am.
