Grayling

Douglas Lee Wilson, 74, of Grayling, MI passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

Visitation for the community he loved and served will take place Friday, August 16, 2024, from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling, MI. Funeral services for family and friends will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Grayling on Saturday, August 17th, beginning at 11 am. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall hosted by St. Francis.

Doug was born February 21, 1950, to J Norman and June (Skiba) Wilson in Alpena, MI. His family moved to Grayling when he was an infant, and he was a proud alumnus of Grayling High School and Central Michigan University. After college, he returned to Grayling to work in the family Black and White Grocery Store. He taught at Grayling High School for a short time before being hired as the Executive Director of the AuSable Valley Youth Service Bureau in 1976 where he dedicated his life to the youth of Crawford and Roscommon Counties providing Social Work and Summer Recreation Services to the youth of the Crawford AuSable School District, Gerrish-Higgins School District (RAPS), and Houghton Lake Community Schools. He was inducted into the GHS Alumni Hall of Fame in 2009 for his service to the community. Funding shortages closed the agency in 2014 after nearly 40 years. In 2018, he became a published author and released a total of five books of poetry. He served as a para-pro and substitute teacher for Grayling Elementary School until his health forced him into retirement in 2022. Doug loved to be outdoors, preferably hiking in the woods or laying on the beach; he was a life-long Yankees Fan; he loved classic rock, Michigan Football, and Rockford Girls Basketball.

Doug is survived by his wife of 32 years, Tracy Wilson, his children, Brock Wilson of Grayling, Brad (Andrea) Wilson of Rockford, MI; Camren (Carlie Jo) Money of Roscommon, Carlie Jane Wilson of Grayling, and his grandchildren Jacob, Luke, Lainee and Perrin; by his siblings John Wilson of Alexandria, VA; Mary (Dave) Vogler of Honor, MI and Patti Pratt of Grayling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Angel Wilson, as well as George Steinbrenner, Randy Meisner, Micky Mantle, Tom Petty, and Bo Schembechler.

Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
