Cynthia Ann Hummel passed from this life into eternal life on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 just days shy of her 70th birthday. Cindy passed gently in her sleep, losing her courageous battle with ALS which she faced with grace, courage and dignity.
Cindy was born in Hazel Park, Michigan and the daughter of Kathy and Russ DuBois. She graduated from Clawson High School and lived in the Detroit area most of her life. She married Francis Hummel in 1971 and they made their home in Royal Oak and Farmington Hills. Cindy worked for many years at AAA of Michigan as an accounting clerk, and later worked at Blue Care Network as a claims approver. Cindy always loved to be ‘Up North’ and she had a long held dream to move north and build a home on the river. This fantasy came to fruition about eight years ago when she and Francis built their dream log cabin home. Cindy thrived in the nature of the woods and the river and was at her happiest in her quilting room in the river house.
Besides spending time with her family and friends, Cindy had a passion for quilting and sewing. She was a most enthusiastic quilter who loved her quilt patterns and fabrics which she assembled into works of art. She had an amazing creative eye for colors and stitches. Where ever she traveled she would research a nearby quilt store to check out patterns and ideas, often leaving each store with a new idea, quilting kit or new friend. In the house on the river her awesome quilting loft was the site of many week long quilting bees she hosted, and she was the 'Queen Bee' of quilting at these events. Cindy was also a collector of Hummel figurines and owned nearly fifty originals, and like her love for scouting out quilting stores she frequented consignment shops in hopes of finding a rare Hummel.
Cindy was involved in her community in Metro Detroit working as a hospice field worker, working primarily with AIDS patients sharing her love and compassion with patients. When she relocated to northern Michigan she worked tirelessly for the Crawford County Community Christian Help Center Food Pantry, first as a volunteer then as assistant director and ultimately as Food Pantry director. She loved her work and the opportunity to help people access food. Cindy recently retired from her work as Director.
Cindy had a soft spot for Old English sheep dogs, of which she had several. Additionally she was engaged in showing these dogs she loved. Most recently she and Francis acquired a Golden Doodle puppy who brought Cindy legends of pleasure. Cindy adored Christmas and decorating for Christmas, and was most proud of her annual fully decked-out 15 foot Christmas tree. Cindy loved to pull pranks on her family and friends. She was an eager prankster, often conniving a means by which she could create extra excitement at family gatherings.
Cindy was happily married to Francis for 49 years and 4 months, passing just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. She and Francis returned from a pre-anniverary celebration in Maui 48 hours prior to her death.
Her family paid this tribute to her, ‘Cindy was a kind and caring person. She spoke often of people’s kindness as it was an important value to her. She opened her heart and her home to many family gatherings and she will be sorely missed.’
Cindy is survived by her husband, Francis Hummel, her son Brad and daughter-in-law Deniece Hummel, her Aunt Judy and numerous Hummel’s of the Stanley and Ethel Hummel family.
