Ben Smallwood, 78, of Grayling and formerly of Birmingham passed away on Friday, January 2nd, 2009. Ben was born in Pikeville, Kentucky on September 1, 1930, the son of the late Monroe and Millie Smallwood. He served in the U.S. Army as a Sgt. with overseas duty in Germany. Ben married the formed Catherine Vinnie Smith on March 28, 1952 in Birmingham, Michigan. He worked as a Fleet Manager at the Birmingham Post Office for 34 years Ben was a life member of VFW Post 2645 of Southfield. He served on the Boy Scout Regional Committee for District #5 of Detroit. Survived by: Wife: Catherine of 56 years Sons: Dale (Sandy) Smallwood of Florida. Mark Smallwood of Grayling, Michigan., Jim (Kim) Smallwood of Burton, Michigan. Daughters: Sherry (Tom) Graziano of Grayling, Michigan. Mary (Mark) Montbriand of Freeland, Michigan. Amy Smallwood of Grayling, Michigan. 15 Grandchildren and 14 Great-grandchildren Sisters: Fern Webb of Kentucky Audrey Mullins of Kentucky. Brother: Roy (Sue) Smallwood of Kentucky. Preceded in death by brothers: Aubrey, Marvin, and Creed Smallwood and sister: Melster Hampton. Visitation will be held at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling on Sunday Jan. 4, 2009 between 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors of Clawson on Monday January 5, 2009 between 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday January 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Birmingham with Dr. Jack Harnish officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
