Ann Kathryn Hamlin

January 26, 1925 — August 8, 2015

Ann Kathryn Hamlin, 90, lifelong resident of Grayling, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2015. She was born in Riverview, a former town located in Kalkaska County at the Crawford County line. Her parents were Emma (Meyer) and William Weiss. She graduated from Grayling High School.Ann was one of the original "Rosie the Riveter's". She managed many businesses in the Grayling area: Grayling Country Club, Laurine's, American Legion, the NCO at Camp Grayling, and worked at Shoppenagon's and Spikes. Ann was very patriotic and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for about 58 years. She served in several roles to include President. Ann was honored to be Miss Auxiliary for the 2012 AuSable River Canoe Marathon parade. Ann was most proud of her family and dedicated her life to their pursuits. She was an exuberant cheerleader attending more sporting events than a seasoned ESPN reporter; she kept the refs on their toes, too. Ann delighted in hosting her annual Christmas Party that often numbered 50-60 beloved family members and friends. This included Santa Claus, of course. Food, folks and fun were abundant. The ultimate caretaker, Ann was on call 24-7. She could always be counted on for whatever was needed. Ann wore many different hats from nurse to chauffeur to stalwart supporter. She eased the burdens of many, and her home was control central. With her sassy and bold spirit, Ann was always good for a laugh. Ann loved, in no particular order: reading, the Tigers, phone calls, ice cubes, birds, Ritz crackers, her small but mighty Chihuahua, Lola, flowers, the American flag, her hair dresser, sunshine and fairness. In the simple yet so appropriate words of Helen Keller, "Life is an exciting business and most exciting when it is lived for others." Let it be said with certainty that Ann Kathryn Hamlin lived a most exciting life. Survived by: Sons: Richard (Margie) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Mark (Mary Ellen) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Dean (Lori) Smith of Grayling, Scott Hamlin of Levering, and Paul (Beth) Hamlin of Grayling. Stepchildren: Richard Hamlin, Sharlene Hamlin, and Jacqueline Huber. She had 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Sister: Evelyn (Bob) Stephan of Grayling. Preceded in death by: her parents, 7 brothers, 4 sisters, and husband Richard Hamlin.
