Allan Roe Smith

November 12, 1930 — October 1, 2012

Allan Roe Smith passed away on October 1, 2012 at home looking over his beloved KP Lake after a long illness. Born November 12 1930, Allan graduated from Dearborn High School and then went on to proudly graduate with the true blue blood of a University of Michigan Wolverine earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While in college and throughout his life he was active in his fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi. His career as a mechanical engineer brought his skills to some of the largest building projects in Michigan. As a true Michigander, he rose and fell with his teams (Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, and Wolverines - he never liked basketball, didn't think it was right that you could win the game by breaking the rules). After retiring Allan pursued many passions; he loved his Ford Model T and Model A; on sunny days he and JoAnn could be found driving down the road tooting his horn at all the passer-byers. He was serious in his bowling, golf, and bridge games chastising himself when he felt he didn't played his best. Usually, these were scores were such any other person would be proud to claim! Allan was committed to the well-being of his community and was an active member of Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church, the Lovells Township Historical Society, and The Hook and Trigger Club. Each year he happily hooked up his old home-made trailer to a much older Model T or Model A and drove the Lovells miniature schoolhouse in the Lovells Bridge Walk. Finally, nothing was more enjoyable to him than KP Lake and his home there. Over the years, he spent many happy hours improving his KP Lake home. He made sure every engineering detail of every home improvement (stone walls, indoor plumbing, central heat and air, etc) met his standards so he could enjoy relaxing on the deck overlooking the lake. Allan loved his family and always wanted to know the latest about each of his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Eva Merle (Roe) Smith and Harold Clayton Smith and his sister Martha Merle (Smith) Dunn. He is survived by his wife of 58 years JoAnn Jamison Smith, his children and their spouses, and grandchildren: Janet and Douglas Yee (Lynn and Mark, Scott and Lacey), Douglas and Sue Smith (Tom, Jennifer), Donald and Cynthia Smith (Devon, Lora Beth and Matt, and Eric and Jessie), and of course, his two donut-loving dogs Sadie and Abigail. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Lovells Township Historical Society (www.lovellsmuseum.com).
