Alfred CARL Fernelius

Alfred "Carl" Fernelius, 87, of Roscommon, MI, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Carl was born in Highland Park, MI on February 19, 1927, son of the late Elysabeth (Sorsen) and Alfred Reinholt Fernelius. Carl attended Highland Park High School and served as a Motorcycle Policeman in the U.S. Army during WWII in Austria. Carl married Roxie (Sogomonian) Summers in 1951 in Detroit, MI. They spent several summers at Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Torch Lake where he served as the trips counselor and she as the camp nurse. He graduated from Wayne State University with a Ph.D. in English Literature and taught at Wayne, University of Detroit and Kirtland Community College. Carl received a Smith-Mundt Grant which allowed him to teach English in Finland, in honor of his heritage, where he and his family lived for two years. Carl and Roxie moved to Roscommon, MI. in 1972 and he retired from Kirtland Community College in 1989. Carl and Roxie spent many summers on Drummond Island and enjoyed winters in Georgia. Carl loved playing golf and took pleasure in following the Masters Tournament. He was also a downhill skier and enjoyed reading, boating, camping, going to sauna and watching the Detroit Tigers on TV. Carl is survived by his wife Roxie of 63 years, daughter Karen (Steven) Coe of Grayling, MI, son Mark (Donna) Fernelius of Addison, MI, daughter Laura (Ceci Cain) Fernelius of Merrimac, WI and son Eric (Diane) Fernelius of Beulah, MI; grandchildren Elysabeth (Justin) Dreger, Summer Coe, Sydney Marriott, Braden Coe and Jessica Fernelius; and great grandchildren Brookelyn Dreger, Sebastian Coe, and Arshak Hurst. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, June. A Celebration of Carl's Life will be held on June 30, 2014 at Roscommon VFW Hall at 2:00 p.m. with family receiving guests at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to Kirtland Community College for Student Scholarship, or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
